Released in 2006 with a Proof mintage of only 160,870, this commemorative coin honors the San Francisco Mint on the 100th anniversary of one of the greatest natural disasters in American history, the devastating 1906 San Francisco Earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people and destroyed around 80% of the city. Amid the smoking ruins left by the cataclysmic catastrophe stood the Old San Francisco Mint. Not only had the Mint survived, but it was the only financial building to withstand the effects of the earthquake and resulting fire. It was a good thing, too, because at that time the San Francisco Mint held more than $300 million in gold — a third of all the nation’s gold reserves! Built on a granite foundation, the Mint was soon nicknamed “The Granite Lady” in admiration for its solid construction.
But even that might not have been enough without the heroic efforts of mint employees and ten U.S. Coast Artillery soldiers, who battled 200-foot flames using a hose, buckets, and an artesian well. Their heroism ensured the Old Mint's survival and became a beacon of hope for the entire city. In the days that followed, the Old Mint played a major role in helping to rebuild the city.
The ‘Old Granite Lady’ produced Morgan Dollars from 1878 until 1904 (as well as for a single year in 1921), but when compared to other Mint’s production numbers, the results are staggering: The San Francisco Mint produced less than 18% of ALL Morgan Dollars!
