Burnished coins have a soft, matte-like finish. They're somewhat shiny, but not as shiny or as vibrant as a proof coin.

Burnished coins sometimes are referred to as having a "Satin Finish", which describes a process where the coins are struck from dies that are first sandblasted with a fine mixture of sand and glass beads.

To differentiate both Uncirculated coins, the 2008-W Uncirculated Burnished coins contain the W mint mark. The 2007 non collector version Uncirculated Silver Eagles do not display a mint mark.

2008 was the third year in which the Mint produced a special W mint state Silver eagle besides producing the regular 2008 non W mint state and proof silver eagles. On March 17, 2008 the U.S. Mint began offering the 2008-W Mint State Silver eagles to the public.

There were 47,000 2008 Burnished Silver Eagles that were produced with the 2007 reverse design instead of the new 2008 design. The most notable difference you will see is that the 2007 coin does NOT feature a tail on the letter “U” and the dash between the words “Silver” and “One” will be shaped like a tilde, which was part of the 2007 reverse font. These coins have been highly sought after since they are the rarest burnished eagle coins.

For three years, the U.S. Mint released the Burnished Silver Eagles coins before canceling production of the coins in 2009 and 2010 as it diverted available blanks to the production of the bullion Silver Eagles which it was required by law at the time to strike to meet demand. In 2011, the Burnished production resumed and has been struck annually ever since.
